"Can calories reduction prevent or stop aging?"
Calories reduction basically means taking in less calories in our daily meals.
While this may seem like a strange thing, studies on rats and monkeys (Weindruch and Walford, 1988) with reduced calories intake have shown that they do live longer lives (up to 40% under controlled environment).
And they also exhibit increased resistance to age-related diseases.
Although scientists are still not certain how calories reduction actually increases life span, there are some theories. These include alteration of cellular metabolism and the genetic makeup of the animals.
Whatever that means is not important. What's important is that it works on the animals tested which brings us to the next question.
If reducing calories intake is so good, then why is it not a popular treatment? The reasons are many:
- Although there are studies done on animals, no conclusive studies have yet been done on humans.
- Reducing intake of calories means reducing eating. The feeling of hunger and the stress involved in it can be too much for most people.
- Eating less means having less energy (that's the idea actually : less energy for the body cells to age). So you can forget about exercising or playing your favorite games and sports since these can be harmful to your body.
- Reducing intake of calories can also reduce one's fertility and libido. Do you want to sacrifice your sex life?
So before you start starving (and maybe become anorexic), be aware of the above negative side effects.
Instead of leading a longer but meaningless life with calories reduction treatment, you may want to explore other options like HGH remedies, anti-oxidants etc.
